Abstract

POSTHUMANISM IN SÜLEYMAN EZBER’S ROBOT ARKADAŞIM SERIES

Humanism is an understanding that places reason and will at the forefront, centring on humanity and defining its position in the universe. Particularly since the 19th century, developments in artificial intelligence and robotics technologies have begun to impact daily life, prompting a re-examination of the relationship between humans and technology. The idea of overcoming individuals' cognitive, biological and mental limitations through technological advances paved the way for the emergence of transhumanism. Transhumanism proposes a longer, healthier and happier life based on increasing individuals' capacities. Thus, humanity, which has begun to integrate with machines, enables the formation of new life forms at the centre of posthumanist thought. Posthumanism proposes that all beings be considered within a flat ontology to eliminate discrimination arising from speciesism and defends the equality of all beings by rejecting the domination of one species over another. The coexistence of biological humans and new entities introduces Haraway's concept of ‘companion species’ into the literature. Companion species share all responsibilities with humans by existing alongside them. In this article, the Robot Arkadaşım series of books, published in 2022 by Süleyman Ezber, who writes literary works in the field of children's literature, will be examined in the context of posthumanism. The fact that the vast majority of posthumanism studies are concentrated in the fields of religion and philosophy indicates a need for studies in the field of literature as well. In this study, post-humanism is addressed through literary texts, aiming to fill this gap in the field. The main character of the series, Hıçkırık, is among the post-human robots that exemplify the concept of companion species. As such characters begin to appear in literary fiction in an ordinary manner, young readers are prepared for the future.
